Despite not being a main character on Seinfeld, David Puddy remains a fan favourite who delivered some classic lines throughout the hit show’s run.

After nearly 25 years, the Seinfeld series finale is still being discussed. Former series star Wayne Knight recently spoke about the final Seinfeld episode, which many fans argue was nothing more than a clip show. However, regardless of how popular (or unpopular) the final episode was, fans still love Seinfeld.

In fact, in the years since the finale aired, the series has enjoyed a syndicated release as well as being available to stream on Netflix. This has allowed fans to further explore the show's rich cast of characters. One such character is David Puddy - Elaine's on again, off again love interest. While Puddy can only be seen in a handful of episodes, he's easily one of the most quoted and talked about characters on the series, to such a degree that Redditors have endeavored to list his best quotes.

Though David Puddy was not a frequently seen Seinfeld character, he quickly grew on fans in the brief appearances he’d make. As time passed and Puddy continued to return, audiences learned much more about the character – like the fact that he’s a Christian.

It seems that no one was more surprised to learn of Puddy’s devout religious nature than Elaine was. This was emphasized, as Redditor -dr-van-nostrand- reminds us, when Elaine told Puddy to take her neighbor's newspaper. Puddy got a little biblical, stating, “Sorry. Thou shalt not steal.” A hilarious, but very earnest surprise on the character’s part.

While there are a variety of sides to Puddy that audiences might not have known about straight off the start, when it comes to his interests, he’s pretty straight forward. Cars and sports rank quite high – especially when it comes to playoff season.

Episode 22 of the sixth season reveals that Puddy is a face painter – something that Elaine is not thrilled about. Redditor gunners98 points out a beloved Puddy quote that came after he attended a New Jersey Devils playoff game. Nearly hit by a car, Puddy taunts the passengers, hissing, “We’re the devils! The devils!” Puddy may seem mellow, but things quickly change when sports are involved.

In the first episode of Seinfeld’s ninth season, Elaine and Puddy go on a trip to Europe together. Unsurprisingly, they break up on the flight home to New York. This doesn’t last long, however, and as Redditor Udonegetthashow points out, Pudy’s response to the couple getting back together is “Let’s make out.”

Straight from Puddy’s first introduction on Seinfeld, it was clear that he was a man of few words. He’s not scared to get straight to the point and the way he handles his relationship with Elaine is both cringeworthy and hilarious. It was his ability to make blunt suggestions like this that likely endeared so many Seinfeld fans to him.

Redditor JaMicho34 reminds viewers of another simplistic and somewhat juvenile Puddy quote with, “This is bogus, man!” Puddy delivered this outburst after learning from a priest that he would be joining Elaine in hell for committing the sin of premarital sex.

Puddy’s religious devotion was definitely a surprise. As Elaine learned more about it, he began to goad her with the idea that he was going to heaven, and she was going to hell. The laugh out loud immaturity with which Puddy deals with this situation is matched only by his own reaction to the prospect of an afterlife spent in hell.

After being called a “grease monkey” by Jerry, Puddy is characteristically straight forward in showing his disdain for the term. Redditor mikie_mike86 reminds fans of the moment with, “I don’t know too many monkeys who could take apart a fuel injector.”

The point is certainly a valid one and although Puddy isn’t very bright when it comes to many aspects of day to day life, being a mechanic does require a substantial amount of knowledge. He’s proud of who he is and what he does for a living and Jerry’s comment comes off as more than a little insensitive as a result, and just one of his comments on Seinfeld that have aged poorly over the years.

Elaine and audiences were surprised to learn of another Puddy attribute in The Face Painter episode. Redditor riconene32 captures the moment with Puddy’s “…support the team” quote. There’s no doubt that Puddy supports his team, and in doing so, he offers a glimpse of the outright wild man behind a typically stoic nature.

Completely over the top would probably be the best way to describe Puddy’s fanaticism. Part of what makes this quote so hilarious is how it offers the last glimpse of calm before Puddy sets off for the hockey game. The moment he heads out, he snaps, turning into a yelling, aggressive, hilarious version of the reserved character so many already loved.

Bad choices in terms of taste seem to be a constant part of who Puddy is as one of the best side characters on Seinfeld, much to the dismay of Elaine. Redditor Mathrawker666 offers a slightly truncated Puddy quote with, “Ask the 8 ball.” Fans will remember that this is in reference to a hideous, multicolored 8-ball leather jacket that Puddy wore.

Known more widely as “You got a question… you ask the 8 ball,” Puddy’s ridiculous overconfidence is a key component to the humor here. By the time this jacket was featured in the series, it had become a real-life joke in terms of style. Puddy didn’t get the message and instead embraced it wholeheartedly, convinced he’d stumbled upon something great.

For any Seinfeld fan who immediately found Puddy hilarious, the idea that he was a high-fiver wasn’t all that surprising. However, it definitely was the perfect addition to a character that so many already felt was perfect. Redditor Distinct_Song4540 offers a classic Puddy quote, then, with, “High five.”

Seeing Puddy eagerly await reciprocation with his hand in the air is just downright funny. Because he’s typically so reserved and impassive, the degree of joy that receiving a high five gives him is perfect. In so many ways Puddy is like a child, and wanting a high five characters like Jerry and Elaine – who actively hate the habit, makes him a joy to watch.

Redditor TaterBugMom offers up this absolutely classic David Puddy quote: “Feels like an Arby’s night.” Puddy would regularly say this, much to the visible disappointment of Elaine. The fast-food chain is a Puddy favorite and each visit apparently requires pointing it out.

Only Puddy would understand how any given night of the week could feel like an Arby’s night, but that in itself is a big part of the humor behind this quote. The regular guy shtick is a big part of who Puddy is, but this is because it’s done so well that few – if any sitcoms have managed to match it, even after all these years.

Again and again throughout Seinfeld’s later seasons and episodes, Puddy would make the statement that has since come to define him. “Yeah that’s right” comes courtesy of Redditor This-Dude_Abides, and without it, Puddy just wouldn’t be Puddy.

The calm and straight-forward manner in which Puddy typically delivers the line never fails to make fans laugh. This is largely down to how he makes the statement sound as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world. At the same time, the monotone delivery also speaks to Puddy’s simple nature. In a world as complex as Seinfeld’s he’s the perfect addition.

His favourite filmmakers include: Jordan Peele, David Lean, Alfred Hitchcock, Mike Leigh, Steven Spielberg, the Dardenne Brothers, Noah Baumbach, Michael Haneke, Barry Jenkins and Andrea Arnold.
